Ralph is clearly the villain of his own movie

This sequel to Wreck-It Ralph comes six years later. With the rise of technology and the digital age, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018, directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston) brings the 80s arcade game for an adventure in the internet.
I was quite anticipated to watch this movie due to its amazing trailer that featured cameos from all the old and new Disney Princesses—they were indeed one of the major highlights of this animated movie. The addition of Shank (Gal Gadot) was a treat as well; one of my favourite scenes of the movie was the race car scene between Shank and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman).
The movie does a terrific job in illustrating what it’s like to live in the age of the internet. The BuzzzTube hearts and viral videos were really clever, and is an accurate depiction of how the internet works. More hearts does equals to more $$$$. The whole concept of the internet reminded me of WALL-E because of how everyone was in their little pods that took them to the different websites.
The only downside to Ralph Breaks the Internet for me would be Ralph (John C. Reilly) and the characterisation for his character. “Needy, clingy, and self-destructive” was how Ralph described himself, and that couldn’t have been a more accurate description for his character in this sequel.
In Wreck-It Ralph, the movie was focused on Ralph trying not to be the bad guy anymore, but here in this sequel, he feels like the bad guy. A lot of the major plot points that happens in Ralph Breaks the Internet is all due to the dum-dum decisions that Ralph makes. Ralph can be thought of as both a hero and an antagonist because his need to be a good person combined with his self-destructive behaviour was what saved and caused all the problems in the first place.
Here’s a list of things that Ralph wrecked:
1. Ralph caused Vanellope to break her Sugar Rush game, which led to the both of them having to travel to eBay in the first place.
2. Ralph bid too high for the Sugar Rush steering wheel ($27,001), which caused them to have to earn money for the eBay item.
3. Ralph let out the virus into Slaughter Race, which caused Vanellope to almost die.
4. Ralph’s insecurities made him a virus to the internet, which put Vanellope in harm’s way again.
5. Ralph knocked over the Pinterest tower, which caused Vanellope to almost fall to her death.
The true saviours of the third act were the Disney Princesses. Though it felt a tad feminist with the princesses saying, “a man who needs saving?!”, their appearance at the end made the movie refreshing. Even though the third act suffered, the two end-credits sequences at the end were a thrill to watch—it was clickbait for a Frozen 2 preview!
Ralph Breaks the Internet is a very exciting and relatable animated movie—but be warn, you will get irritated at some point by Ralph.
