This post for Big Little Lies “Tell-Tale Hearts” contains spoilers.

“Tell-Tale Hearts” (2019, directed by Andrea Arnold) revisits some nasty memories and reveals some old lies.

I can’t imagine what it must be like for a child to find out who his father is from a classmate. This is exactly what our precious Ziggy (Iain Armitage) had to go through alone. Fortunately, Jane (Shailene Woodley) couldn’t bear to lie to him anymore and she revealed the truth to Ziggy. Amidst other lies, Madeline’s (Reese Witherspoon) affair with the theatre director has also unravelled itself (accidentally) by Abigail (Kathryn Newton).

“I will not not be rich.” – Renata Klein

Apart from Bonnie’s (ZoΓ« Kravitz) suffer-in-silence isolation, there isn’t much to go about her character at the moment as she’s avoiding all forms of human interaction, including the one with her mother. Renata (Laura Dern) also realises that she has been lied to by her husband Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling), and could stand to lose her entire fortune.

Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) irks me in this episode, as she refuses to believe that her beloved dead son Perry (Alexander SkarsgΓ₯rd) was abusive towards Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and had raped Jane (Shailene Woodley). It’s both admirable and despicable that Streep is able to effortlessly play the role of the mother-in-law; I have no doubt that she would win an award for her supporting role given that the writers have used her so efficiently in this second season.

Rating: 4/5

Sidenotes on “Tell-Tale Hearts”:

  • That red dress that Renata wore in court, WOW!
  • Unlike in Season 1, Chloe (Darby Camp) doesn’t seem to be the DJ in this season, as much of the screentime has gone to the adults.
  • If all else fails for Celeste and Jane, and they are unable to move on from their complicated past, then perhaps they can co-parent together.
