This post for Big Little Lies “The Bad Mother” contains spoilers.
Despite all the lies and dishonesty surrounding Season 2 of Big Little Lies, you can’t say that Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) are not good mothers because no matter what the circumstances are, they put their children in first priority.
“Shut the fuck up for the rest of your fucked-up fucking life.” – Renata Klein
In “The Bad Mother” (2019, directed by Andrea Arnold), the custody battle between Celeste and her mother-in-law Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) continues in court. Her Monterey Five clique also made an appearance in court to show their support for Celeste, but as the episode goes on, the custody battle does not seem to be going in the way that everyone would want it to go.

The episode paces back and forth to each character’s story, but perhaps the most shocking revelations revealed here are 1. Celeste didn’t just sleep with one “Joe”, she slept with many “Joe(s)”, and 2. Renata’s husband Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling), slept with the nanny, but I guess this isn’t shocking news given the fact that Gordon is such a sleazy character. I feel so sad for Renata because she married an asshole, who basically ruined her life and what she has built for herself.
I just feel like given the fact that this season has been teasing about Bonnie’s guilt, and now even Madeline has joined the guilty club. I think either one of them is going to spill the tea, and the friendship between the Monterey Five won’t last if the lie is revealed because according to Celeste, “The ‘lie’ is the ‘friendship’.”.
Even though next week is the final episode, the series’ progression feels too slow. I’m sure the lie will be exposed next week, and Mary Louise would probably move on with her life once she gets to the bottom of her son’s death. And I guess I’m mostly still watching because of Renata.
